Who knows that you are ready for promotion?

03/05/2024

Being "promotion ready" in an organisation means more than just meeting the basic requirements of your current role.

It involves actively cultivating the skills, mindset, and relationships needed to take on increased responsibility and leadership.  The decision makers in your organisation need to have confidence that you're ready - so it's up to you to show them that you are.

Imagine yourself at the next level now and start embodying the qualities and behaviours associated with that role.

Whether it's taking on additional responsibilities, seeking out leadership opportunities, or proactively solving problems, doing the things now that you'd be doing then demonstrates your readiness for advancement.

By consistently delivering high-quality work, seeking out opportunities for growth and development, and building strong relationships with colleagues and mentors, you not only increase your chances of securing a promotion but also ensure that you're equipped to excel in a higher-level role and contribute meaningfully to the organisation's success.

And when you've done that, make sure it's obvious that you want a step up.

Here's how:

  • Schedule a Meeting: Take initiative by scheduling a meeting with your manager or relevant decision makers to discuss your career goals and aspirations. Use this opportunity to express your interest in advancement and inquire about the steps needed to progress within the organisation.

  • Highlight Your Achievements: Showcase your accomplishments and contributions to the organisation during performance reviews, one-on-one meetings, or through regular updates. By demonstrating your value and impact, you subtly communicate your readiness for increased responsibility.

  • Seek Feedback: Actively seek feedback from your manager or colleagues on areas for improvement and opportunities for growth. Use this feedback to tailor your development plan and show your commitment to continuous improvement and advancement.

  • Take on Additional Responsibilities: Volunteer for projects or tasks that align with the responsibilities of the next level role you're aspiring to. By taking initiative and demonstrating your ability to handle more complex or strategic tasks, you signal to decision makers that you're ready for a promotion.

  • Communicate Your Career Goals: Be transparent about your career aspirations and long-term goals with your manager or HR department. By openly discussing your desire for advancement and the steps you're taking to achieve it, you ensure that decision makers are aware of your ambitions and can support you in reaching them.
